On creating unique spaces with Hugh Nelson
He was great! He was so patient and so tolerant and
so willing to share his knowledge and experiences.
Yet, on the other hand he would say, “I don’t think
we have ever done that before, but if you are
willing to let us try, we will get it right to your
satisfaction.
We wanted both fun and function…something you don’t
see everyday. I always like to think of things that
maybe other people have not used in their homes or
in their designs.
We wanted something that would be extremely
comfortable not only for ourselves, since we don’t
have children and also for entertaining family and
friends. Anything from small dinner parties to large
parties… We both love to cook. That was one of our
priorities was having a fun, easy to use kitchen.
I’m very focused on clean, straight lines. I like
things to be very simple not a lot of accessories. I
had that conversation with the cabinet maker. It
took him several attempts for him to capture what I
was saying into an actual piece of sample wood. But,
he really nailed it! He really got what I wanted. It
is just very sleek and simple.
We had seen some years ago on a parade house, some
glass detail on a staircase… I’m not big on a lot of
neither wood nor iron accent, so glass seemed the
obvious choice for the material for the staircase.
If I were going to build another house, I would ONLY
do it if Hugh Nelson could be my builder.
